How to Help a Loved One

Helping a loved one get treatment for autism spectrum disorder

If your child has autism, you probably feel a mixture of emotions. Being a parent of an autistic child is hard under the best of circumstances, and if you have more than one child, it can feel overwhelming. You may wonder if something you have done caused their autism, or you may feel frustrated by their inability to behave warmly towards you. At times, it might feel like a real challenge to relate to your child.

If you suspect that your child may have autism, it is important that you seek a professional opinion as soon as possible. Some of the classic signs of autism include:

Social skills: A child with autism may not respond to their name, may have poor eye contact, will resist cuddling and holding, does not appear to understand other people’s feelings, and prefers playing alone.

Behavioral skills: Children and adolescents or teens with autism may perform repetitive movements, develop specific rituals and become disturbed if they are changed, is unusually sensitive to light, sound, touch, and seems oblivious to pain.

If you notice these symptoms in your child, you should have them evaluated for autism so that prompt, early treatment offered at our specialized autism treatment center in Arkansas can begin to help in order to provide your child with the tools necessary to implement adaptive means of functioning.
